Tastes Like Childhood

Comfort foods bring autumn home.

October means pumpkins, hot apple cider, fall leaves, and sweaters. Since South Florida is hardly the setting of the typical Norman Rockwell autumn, we locals must make a stretch for that classic fall experience. Chef Michael Wagner, owner of the award-winning restaurant, Lola’s on Harrison, wants to help. From 6 to 8 p.m. this Tuesday, he’ll be teaching a Fall Comfort Food cooking class at the Whole Foods Market Lifestyle Center (2000 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale). Chef Wagner defines comfort food as, “warm, approachable, common Classic American cuisine … that people feel good when they eat.” It brings them “back to a time and place,” he explains, often reminding them of childhood. The class costs $25, but a belly full of fall’s golden warmth (and the ability to recreate it at home all season long) may very well be priceless.
