Best Lawyer

Spunky and sincere, defense attorney Bill Gelin is something of an oddity in the legal profession. He cares more about you than about being paid — he even gave back his law school-issued stopwatch and refuses to live his life in the standard six-minute billing cycles. Although lawyering is his living and he does charge for his services, this 40ish UC-Berkeley alum (Stanford Law) hasn't let years of practicing criminal law in South Florida totally jade him. Instead of throwing up his hands, Gelin got a bunch of other lawyers together and formed the Justice Advocacy Association of Broward County. He blogs almost every day about judges who aren't acting judgely and about the defendants, witnesses, and regular folk who may not be getting a fair shake over at the waterfront jail and nearby courthouse:

  1. Bill Gelin did nothing more than create a wall where local attorneys could post anonyomous slurs and rumors about other judges and lawyers. Whoever wrote his blurb has obviously never really read the blog, which snipes, bites, and disparages other attorneys and Judges in the Courthouse. To make matters worse, Gelin only allows certain individuals to post on his site and routinely blocks posters, such all attorneys who work for Michael Satz and are employed by the Office of the State Attorney in Broward County. The same goes for other posters who may not share the same viewpoint as JAAB. To say that he cares more about 'you than about being paid' makes my stomach turn. Gelin cares about his 'agenda' and that's it. Whoever your voting block is got it wrong. Way wrong.

  2. Great news!!! Congratulations!! Lets clean up the rest of Broward County including crooked businesses and landlords.
I got plenty of information on both.

  3. An excellent choice of a young lawyer who has stood up against the tide and been willing to put his neck out to make a major difference in our community.

His blog is not always popular, but the essence of standing out is to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.

An otherwise apathetic Bar which was noted for inaction has been motivated into action.

And Bill was the gadfly. Good for him. Good for all of us.

  4. Shouldnt the recipient of this award be a successful pratitioner. No one in the Courthouse has ever seen Bill go to trial let alone win one.

Norm, its sad the way you feel. As someone who is a true trail blazer for making change around here, its sad you celebreate someone who couldnt hold your jock. Bill practices hit and run blogging, shows no dedication to the truth in what he wrties, nor will he back up the things he claims when asked. Mr. Gelin is a liar, he has been called out on it numerous times, yet never responds. At least you respond Norm, you are man enough to back up the things you say.

    Thank you Jeff.

It comes at an ironic moment since I also found out today that the "best lawyer" is also delinquent with the Bar. Seems I spaced CLE, and have been winging it without a license, for a pretty short time (days or weeks, I think, just like the pothead prosecutor guy in Miami, who did it, I think, for months).

I had to submit an extension form for a six month extension, so I'm good to go. Basic Skills Phase II, here I come.

Turns out I hit the wheel and the computer picked up I was bad, maybe a day or two ago. Judge Gates today told me all was cool, and I might be able to keep the SPD (after I explained the extension form).

He was super, ever the gentleman, thanks Judge, but I can't take the SPD. I'd feel like a hypocrite, after all my carping, since I think we all need to own up to our mistakes, and move forward, after taking responsibility for your actions. I screwed up, obviously I am caught up in way too many things.

The New Times honor is awesome. Thank you.

  6. Boy, it sure sounds like there are some angry or jealous people out there over this award. Isn't that what happens when a great lawyer does his or her job? Great choice New Times!
