When husband-and-wife team Kai Shing and Michelle Lai left New York’s Chinatown, they couldn’t have gotten farther away from the old kitchen at Golden Unicorn, where Chef Lai worked for 30 years. Now that he’s on his own, he’s serving baked crabs the size of manhole covers, chicken nestled in the hollowed-out skins of pineapples and mangos, trout so fresh they’re practically kicking, and sublime inventions like a baked seafood curry stuffed into a conch shell. He’s obviously having a blast: The food here is superb, cheap, and never dull –- from the Forbidden City duck (order ahead) to giant shrimps seared in whiskey. This place has gotta be one of the best deals in town –- and one of its best-kept secrets.
